Proof of Intention to Return

Canadian Flag

There are several criteria that are examined under this heading, including:

A) Employment Status

Applications are strengthened if a company sponsors the language study and indicates that this study is part of ongoing professional development. Applicants who do not have a current academic career or job will be reviewed very carefully.

B) Academic Status

If the applicant is withdrawing in the middle of an academic career to study for a short term in Canada, they should ensure their future enrollment in future semesters in the home country and provide proof in their Student Authorization applications.

C) Connections to the Home Country

An assessment is made with respect to the applicant's links with his/her home country. Some examples are: family relationships and commitments, business links, future employment prospects, and involvement in community organizations. This shows the strength of the applicant's ties to the home country and provides an additional indication that the student will return upon completion of studies in Canada.

D) Record of Previous International Travel

A previous travel record indicates financial worth. Returning from previous travel abroad also demonstrates a commitment to the home country. Although there may have been previous opportunities to emigrate, the student has returned. Return to the home country is easily proved by including expired passports with the application.

E) Personal Recommendations

While there is no guarantee, letters from important people may also provide support for the case. Letters of support must be provided as part of the overall application package at the time the application is submitted. The visa officer will not request these letters later.

Profile of a "Non Bona Fide" Candidate

Unfortunately, it is often difficult to identify a pattern in terms of age, gender, academic background, or financial backing for students who have entered Canada on a temporary visa and claimed refugee status. For this reason, each individual case is thoroughly reviewed and in each case, the visa officer must be satisfied that the student is a bona fide student and not an intending immigrant.
