Why
did you become an ESL teacher?
After I graduated, I had an opportunity to teach in Japan.
They promised to train me and I was excited about the chance
to live in Japan, and also to work there. I loved teaching,
so after I came home I decided to continue teaching and I
got a job at VEC.
How long have you taught English?
Since January 1991.
How long have you been teaching English at VEC?
Since
February 1997.
Have you taught in foreign countries? How long? Which
country?
Yes, In Japan for 6 years.
What was your major in university or college?
English literature and ESL, also Education (for a separate
degree in Education).
What do you like best about teaching?
The students. I meet students from all over the world, and
I have learned so much from them about curiosity and joy.
I feel that by welcoming students, I can help them to achieve
their dreams.
What is your favourite topic to discuss with students
in your class?
I like to discuss their lives and their dreams. I also like
to hear about their culture and beliefs. We have so many different
ways of thinking, but we are all human with needs in common.
What is your hobby?
Volunteering. I have applied to be a volunteer with Big Sisters
of Vancouver. I am waiting to be matched with a little sister.
After they find a match, I will spend time with my little
sister. I also help to run my co-op as a volunteer.
What advice do you have for new students?
The teachers really want to place you in a class at the right
level. If the class is too easy or too difficult, be sure
to tell us so that we can help you. If you need assistance,
be sure to tell your teacher!
