Credit can sometimes be earned by taking and passing the home institution's examinations. This offers an opportunity for you to show what you have learned while you studied abroad. These exams are often useful to our students, since they are frequently given to evaluate proficiency in language or other skills where retained knowledge is more important than the actual courses.
CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) is one of the most widely accepted Credit-by-Examination programs in the United States. More than 2,800 colleges and universities award credit for satisfactory scores on CLEP exams. You can write for free copies of CLEP Colleges, CLEP Information for Candidates and Registration Form: CLEP PO Box 6601, Princeton, NJ 08541-6601 USA E-mail: clep@ets.org
PRE-APPROVAL You can start by asking your institution for clear instructions about how to earn credit for study abroad. You should know what is and is not possible before you begin. You should also inquire about what sorts of credit can be earned for the program you are planning to take. For example, will it be graduation credit, elective credit, academic major or minor credit, upper division or lower division?
Although no two institutions have identical practices, most campuses have standard procedures for pre-approving program selection, participation, and credit. This makes the process easier for the institution, as well as the student. Your institution might already have a list of programs that are automatically pre-approved.
If Vancouver English Centre is not on the list, you can inquire about how our institution can be added. Of course, we will be pleased to help in any way we can. Your institution probably has a standard program review and approval process that is administered by the faculty, perhaps in consultation with your study abroad counselor.
Your institution probably has a pre-approval form that confirms that your overseas course is creditable for graduation credit. One or more members of the faculty will be required to sign the form before it is valid. Another process might be required for concentration credit.
Before you leave, you should ensure that Vancouver English Centre has been approved for the transfer of credit. If VEC is not on the list of pre-approved programs, you should have submitted and received approval for a petition.
You should also ensure that the VEC program meets your Registrar's regulations for the minimum number of credit hours, to ensure a well-planned graduation schedule.
